Methods to aggregate turbulent fluxes over heterogeneous surfaces: application to SALSA data set in Mexico

چکیده
The issue of using remotely sensed surface temperature to estimate the area-average sensible heat flux over surfaces made up of different vegetated patches has been investigated. The performance of three aggregation procedures, ranging from physically based through semi-empirical, to entirely empirical has been assessed by comparing measured and simulated area-average sensible heat flux. The results show that the physically based scheme perform very well. The performance of the entirely empirical scheme was reasonable but that of the semi-empirical scheme, which actually takes full advantage of remotely sensed data, was very poor. This result suggests that unlike the case of surface fluxes, it is not appropriate to use relationships between model and observational variables (here radiative and aerodynamic surface temperature) that were developed and calibrated at a local/patch scale, for an application at a larger/grid scale just by scaling the parameters. Therefore, future research should be directed towards building robust relationships between model and observational variables directly at the large-scale. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. A preliminary synthesis of major scientific results during the SALSA program
The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the primary results of the Semi-Arid Land–Surface–Atmosphere (SALSA) Program in the context of improvements to our overall understanding of hydrologic, ecologic, and atmospheric processes and their interactions in a semi-arid basin. The major findings and future research needs associated with the different core components of the program a...

In the future, competitive advantages will be given to organisations that can extract valuable information from massive data and make better decisions. In most cases, this data comes from multiple sources. Therefore, the challenge is to aggregate them into a common framework in order to make them meaningful and useful. This paper will first review the most important multi-criteria decision analy...
متن کاملSimultaneous estimation of heat fluxes applied to the wall of a channel with turbulent flow using inverse analysis
The main purpose of this study is to estimate the step heat fluxes applied to the wall of a two-dimensional symmetric channel with turbulent flow. For inverse analysis, conjugate gradient method with adjoint problem is used. In order to calculate the flow field, two equation model is used. In this study, adjoint problem is developed to conduct an inverse analysis of heat transfer in a channel...
متن کاملEstimation of surface sensible heat flux using dual angle observations of radiative surface temperature
In this study, dual angle observations of radiative surface temperature have been used in conjunction with a two-layer model to derive sensible heat flux over a sparsely vegetated surface. Data collected during the semi-arid-land-surface-atmosphere program (SALSA) over a semi-arid grassland in Mexico were used to assess the performance of the approach. The results showed that this approach led ...

Eddy covariance data collected over a horizontal surface on the largest ice body on Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, over 26–29 July 2005 were used to assess the uncertainty of calculating sublimation with a surface energy balance (SEB) model. Data required for input to the SEB model were obtained from an existing automatic weather station. Surface temperatures that were solved iteratively by the SEB mod...
